How about some sciency things?
Everyone should try to improve at discussing privilege, including those who intend to focus their careers on biological conservation.
It’s not really news… but here’s more evidence that “CO2 is plant food” saturates over time, and then reverses. So it isn’t true in any meaningful way. So it’s not true.
Some interesting commentary on charismatic megafauna.
So many scientists talking about how personal and subjective science is! (And trashing Stephen Pinker.) This is a strong rationale for making science more inclusive.
Speaking of charismatic megafauna, humans are quite bad for them, in a geological sense.
Magical Viking crystals!!1!
The HONEST act – an effort to reform science – is quite bad. It’s easy to turn “scientific values” against science, because those purported values are mythical. Science is great, but not for the reason that most people think it is.
Race doesn’t exist, biologically, for our species. But it is a real social phenomenon, one with which I think we are getting better at acknowledging, as a society. And racism has terrible consequences in a variety of ways (here’s one). (Wow, rereading that last article was breathtaking. And I had already gone through it once. That has got to be one the best things I have read this year.)
From 538, p-hacking hilarity.
A diet that basically does not consist of crap, with energy from macronutrients as follows: “protein 18% of total energy (E); fat 40% of E; carbohydrates 37% of E; alcohol 2% of E; fibre/other 3% of E.” Eat that, and it’s more effective for treating moderate to severe depression than therapy or drugs. Wowzers!
Statistical vignettes may not actually be effective for learning, but I still like the idea as part of a course. Maybe I can improve this idea.
Finally! Dino toys with feathers. All is as it should be.
More evidence that “modern” humans are hundreds of thousands (in this case, about 300k) of years old.
Fun Horrifying possible consequence of global climate change – overall waning marine productivity.
Done for now, more coming soon.
